We have come here tonight to discover that we are free‘ said Lamari, lead singer of Chambao to the London crowd, who sang and danced to the rhythm of this group from Malaga who are celebrating ten years in the music industry. They played in KOKO in Camden, London, on Friday 11th October to launch their latest album ’10 años around the world’ which includes musical collaborations with artists such as Rosario, Estopa, Jarabe de Palo, Enrique Morente, Ricky Martin and Macaco.

Chambao is one of those bands where we all recognise at least one of their songs. They became popular in the Spanish music scene a decade ago thanks to their innovative ‘flamenco chill‘ style which we had never heard before.

They arrived in London on only three hours sleep, after a concert in Zaragoza and another appearance in Nerja. However, there was no trace of tiredness in a performance loaded with rhythm and charm, taking us on a tour of all those hits that form part of our recent musical memories: Pokito a poko, Ahi estas tu, Papeles mojados, Duende del sur.

With her characteristic spontaneity, Lamari addressed the public in an unmistakable Malagan accent, using only a few occasional words in English. With some arresting statements (like when she referenced excessive house prices in London) and others that called for us to enjoy the special energy of the venue, she brought us a night where not only Spanish fans came to see Chambao, but also many of the British public who were enchanted by their unique style.
